How To Measure Your Windows

Check out our 4 easy steps to measuring your windows and selecting the correct window guard model. You can also download a printable version here. If you have any questions or concerns with your windows or size, contact us. We are here to help make sure you select the correct guard and install with ease.

Step 1

Determine Installation Placement

Measure the depth from the window face to the frame edge to determine inside or outside window frame installation. Guard end posts are 3/4” square and require a minimum of 3/4” depth for installation.

Install inside window frame when depth is grater than 3/4”

Install outside window frame (wall or window molding) when depth is less than 3/4”

Step 2

Measure Window Length

Measure the length of where the guard will be installed. This will be the width for horizontal installs or the height for vertical installs.

Step 3

Measure Window Opening Space (Danger Zone)

Measure the height or width of the fully open window space (Maximum Opening/Danger Zone). The entire window frame for double-hung, double-slider and casement windows should be guarded completely.

Step 4

Select Guard Size

Take your two measurements and use our Window Guard Model Number Sizing Chart to select the guard size you will need for each window.

Model Number Chart
  • Do's

Window guards should cover the maximum window opening space in single- or double-hung windows. We recommend using window stops if you do not guard the full window.

  • Don'ts

Don't allow more than 4" of open window/screen space. Cover the entire window or use window stops to prevent window panes from exposing more than 4" of open window/screen.

    1. End Post - The end posts are made from 3/4” square tubing and mount to the frame of your window.
    2. Cross Bar - These cross bars provide the main stability for the window guard and can telescope to adjust the width/height of the guard. Our window guards come in either 3, 4, or 5 cross bar models depending on the fixed side dimension.
    3. Support Bar - This support bar provides structure for the cross bars and tie the assembly into one piece.
    4. Adjustable Side - This side of the window guard telescopes to accommodate a range of window widths.
    5. Fixed Side - This side of the window guard has a fixed dimension and is typically selected for how wide open your window is. For example for sliding windows, you pick the fixed side length according to how wide the window opens.
    6. Release Button - Each guard is equipped with 4 quick release buttons for installation, removal, and emergency situations.
